It’s a classic Chinese comfort food dish that is often served on special occasions or when guests come to visit. The beef is cooked in a variety of flavors and spices, such as ginger, garlic, star anise, cloves, Chinese five-spice powder, and Chinese black vinegar, to create a rich and flavorful stew. The beef is usually served with steamed rice or noodles, but can also be served on its own as a main dish. Cow Pot is a popular dish in many parts of the world, particularly Australia, where it is often served at Chinese restaurants.

Prep Time

Cook Time

1 hour

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs of beef chuck or another cut of beef, cut into cubes
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons of cooking oil
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon of ginger, minced
  • 2 star anise
  • 2 cloves
  • 1 teaspoon of Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon of Chinese black vinegar
  • 1 cup of beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of cornstarch

Instructions

1. Heat a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the cooking oil and heat until shimmering. Add the beef cubes and cook until the beef is browned on all sides.

3. Add the beef broth, soy sauce, and sugar to the pot and bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 45 minutes.

5. Serve the cow pot over steamed rice or noodles.

Equipment

  • Large pot or Dutch oven
  • Small bowl

Notes

Be sure to use a good quality beef broth for this recipe. Low-sodium broth is best, as the soy sauce and Chinese black vinegar will add plenty of saltiness to the dish.

Recipe Tips

Beef chuck is a great cut of beef for this recipe as it is a flavorful cut of meat that will become tender when cooked slowly in the sauce. If you can't find beef chuck, you can use other cuts of beef, such as stewing beef or short ribs.

If you like a thicker sauce, you can add more cornstarch. Start by adding 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and then add more until you reach the desired consistency.

This dish can be made ahead of time and reheated when ready to serve. Simply store the cow pot in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
